Popular Chinese restaurant Wu Chow opening Central Austin location

The Chameleon Group is hoping the third time is a charm at its property at 3800 Lamar Blvd.

The hospitality company that first made a splash with Swift’s Attic a decade ago is opening a location of modern Chinese restaurant Wu Chow in a space that has been home to two other Chameleon projects.

The group previously operated the ambitious but short-lived high-end restaurant Guild and the more family-friendly Rosewood Kitchen and Bar in the mixed-use building.

With its latest iteration, the group turns to a concept with a proven track record. The original Wu Chow opened on West Fifth Street in 2005 with a menu that includes a popular dim sum menu highlighted by soup dumplings and entrees like tangerine peel beef and seafood Bird’s Nest.

Wu Chow’s original dim sum chef, Ling Qi Wu, has since gone on to open several restaurants (Lin Asian Bar + Dim Sum, Qi, Ling Kitchen and Ling Wu Asian Kitchen), and the face of Wu Chow’s warm service in its early years, C.K. Chin, parted ways with Chameleon to focus on other projects, including Native and its micro sushi restaurant, Toshokan.

Chameleon, which also operates fast-casual concept Little Wu in the Fareground food court on Congress Avenue, plans to open the new Wu Chow this summer. Once open, Wu Chow on Lamar Boulevard will serve lunch, dinner and weekend dim sum.
