Popular East Ave. coffee shop reopens after violations found in health inspection

Spot Coffee, 200 East Ave., has reopened after correcting health code violations. On Feb. 16, following a re-inspection, the Monroe County Department of Public Health gave the business a greenlight to get back to business.

That same day, on social media, the coffee shop in Rochester's East End wrote: “The staff and management of Spot Rochester extend our gratitude to each and every one of our patrons for your support as we navigated through our recent challenges. Your patience, understanding, and loyalty mean the world to us. We are OPEN.”

On Feb. 9, the health department ordered the business closed after finding one critical health code violation: spoiled food and food from an unapproved source on the premises.

Among 13 non-critical violations: the absence of effective measures to keep out rodents and insects. The health department ordered Spot to hire an exterminator to eliminate a mouse infestation.

“We take recent reports regarding our Rochester, New York location very seriously,” SPoT Coffee representative Peter Kervin said in a Feb. 10 statement. “Upon learning of the complaints and subsequent inspection findings, we took immediate action to address the issue.

He vowed that the café would “work diligently to rectify the situation and ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent any recurrence of such incidents. We are cooperating fully with the Monroe County Department of Public Health and are committed to following their guidance and recommendations. Pest control services have been continued to be engaged, and thorough cleaning and sanitation procedures have and are being implemented.”

Rochester NY restaurant inspections: How safe is your favorite place to eat?

Thousands of Rochesterians eat out every day.  Whether it’s a quick stop for a breakfast sandwich during the morning commute, a soup and salad for lunch, or a dinner date at a fancy restaurant, they take for granted that the food they're buying is safe and that it's not going to make them sick.

It’s not just blind faith. Consumers can feel safe because of a team of inspectors from the health department visit each establishment to ensure that food is being prepared in a clean environment and that health and safety regulations are being followed. Inspection reports are public documents, and the online database at Data.DemocratandChronicle.com has the results of inspections in Rochester and across New York state.  Readers can see when a facility was last inspected and get a summary of the violations that inspectors found.
