Popular Greenfield restaurant Genesis is closing; last day will be Sunday, Feb. 25

After 25 years, the popular Greenfield restaurant Genesis is closing. The restaurant announced on Feb. 15 that the business would be closing its doors for good on Sunday, Feb. 25.

The building has been sold, which prompted the closure of the restaurant, according to Shannon Goveia, an employee at Genesis for 15 years and daughter of one of the owners, Tom Tsopelas.

"The building sold. We have many fond memories running Genesis as a family," said Goveia. "The business holds a lot of sentiment for our family. Our staff and costumers have become our family over the years and they will be greatly missed."

Genesis, 3740 S. 108th St., is an American family restaurant that specializes in home cooking with a large variety of breakfast and lunch items. It was opened by brothers Tom and George Tsopelas and their father Steve on Nov. 1, 1999.

Steve Tsopelas immigrated to America from Greece when he was 27. It was his dream to run businesses once he came to America. He began running different businesses in Chicago before moving to Wisconsin to open Genesis with his sons. Steve died in 2014.

The two brothers continued to run the restaurant to honor their father's legacy. They also had dreams of running their own businesses like their father.

The restaurant became popular for its large breakfasts, which include skillets, omelets and specialty pancakes and waffles.

The eatery is also noted for its soup and salad bar, Goveia said.

"The soup and salad bar is also a huge hit in the community, as it is one of the only ones in the area." said Goveia. "Our chicken dumpling soup has been a staple in the community for 25 years, and many will miss it the most."

The restaurant said it will have specials in the final days of operation. This will include popular menu items, along with the soup and salad bar.

While Genesis will be closing, the family also owns the Golden Corral at 300 W. Layton Ave. in Greenfield. The brothers still plan on running that restaurant.
