A Jacksonville Beach amusement park plans to remain open for at least nine more months before closing permanently to make way for redevelopment into a multi-million dollar luxury apartment community.

Adventure Landing announced Tuesday it has reached an agreement with its landlord to continue operating at 1944 Beach Blvd. for the 2023 season. Unless it receives another lease extension, the landmark amusement park could close at the end of September 2023.

The popular amusement and water park had been scheduled to close on Dec. 31.

Opened in 1995, Adventure Landing features Shipwreck Island water park, a go-kart track, an arcade, laser tag, miniature golf, batting cages and a youth roller coaster.

Trevato Development Group bought the property in February. The Jacksonville Beach City Council in November approved unanimously rezoning and related land use allowing Trevato to build 415 apartment units including 30 designated for workforce housing.

Pushback from residents plus concern about traffic and protected wetlands led Trevato to revise the project since it initially was proposed. The size of the project as well as the loss of recreational opportunities for Northeast Florida families also was a concern.

With a lease extension in place, Adventure Landing announced that 2023 season passes would be available immediately.

Jeremy Christian, park general manager, said in a news release announcing the lease extension that "the Adventure Landing story will not end in 2023, as the owners are in the process of exploring other locations in the Jacksonville area to build another water park."

"Adventure Landing will remain a positive fixture in the Jacksonville community and is looking forward to carrying out the traditions of providing family entertainment in a safe, clean, and fun environment for generations to come. So, 'Come Play with Us' for the rest of the winter season, into 2023 and for many more seasons to come," Christian said.

Its sister amusement park, Adventure Landing Jacksonville at 4825 Blanding Blvd. on the city's Westside, closed in June 2021, after 24 years in business. The property subsequently was sold to Amazon for use as a parking lot for its delivery center.

The Jacksonville Beach site consists of just over 22 acres of land located on the south side of Beach Boulevard just east of the Beach Boulevard Intracoastal Waterway bridge.

Adventure Landing said it has attracted an average of 500,000 guests annually and served "as the largest youth employer in Duval County year after year."
