Popular neighborhood bar chain eyes site at Framingham's Shoppers World

FRAMINGHAM More than three years after John Harvard's Brewery & Ale House closed its Shoppers World location, the spot is being eyed by a growing restaurant and bar chain.

On Monday, representatives of Tavern in the Square, a full-service restaurant and bar with locations scattered across Greater Boston and beyond, are scheduled to appear before the Framingham Board of License Commissioners. Their appearance is part of a public hearing as they hope to obtain a new annual all alcohol and common victualer license.

Officials from Tavern in the Square couldn't be reached for comment.

Tavern in the Square, which is managed by a parent company called Boston Hospitality Group, opened its first restaurant in 2004 in Central Square in Cambridge. It has since expanded to 12 locations, including two in Rhode Island and one in Connecticut, with a 13th scheduled to open early next month in Tyngsborough.

The closest location of the restaurant to Framingham is in Shrewsbury. Its owners describe their business as "an evolution of the classic neighborhood joint," offering a mix of burgers, bowls and cocktails, according to Tavern in the Square's website.

John Harvard's Brewery & Ale House closed in Framingham during the spring of 2020, shortly after the pandemic took hold. The location, within Shoppers World and reportedly covering 8,500 square feet, is between a Marshalls and a Michaels crafts store.
