Popular Phoenix hiking trails close due to excessive heat: Here's when they'll open

A heat warning sign stands at the entrance of the popular hiking spot at Camelback Mountain in Phoenix on June 10, 2022. City officials restricted access to some hiking trails throughout the city due to the extreme temperatures.

Hiking on two of the most popular mountains in Phoenix will be limited this weekend in anticipation of extreme heat.

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department tweeted on Friday that hiking trails on Camelback Mountain and Piestewa Peak will be closed between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday, June 10, through Sunday, June 12.

The city restricts access to popular trails on days when the National Weather Service issues excessive heat warnings. Parking lot gates will be closed during the restricted hours and park rangers will be at the trails to inform hikers of the closure.

Do you have enough water? Here's how to avoid dehydration in extreme heat

This weekend's hiking restrictions at Camelback and Piestewa are part of a plan the city implemented in October 2021 to reduce the number of heat-related rescues.

The Echo Canyon and Cholla trails on Camelback Mountain, as well as all trails associated with Piestewa Peak Trailhead in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve are included.

When there are no excessive heat warnings in effect, Phoenix Parks and Recreation recommends hiking in the early morning or evening hours when the temperature is cooler. Bring plenty of water and sun protection.
