Popular Yorktown market moving; new grocery store to open in Bedford

Supermarket shoppers in Westchester are in for a few changes in 2022, including a popular Yorktown grocery outgrowing its space, a new DeCicco's & Sons market opening, and finally, a new contactless pick-up concept, the likes of which hasn't yet been seen on the east coast.

Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace moving

Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace in Yorktown is on the move.

The Italian American specialty grocer, originally founded in 1998 on Long Island, came to Yorktown in 2019, when it moved into the space formerly occupied by Turco's grocery store.

Now, the grocery store has outgrown its space. The Market's owners are eyeing a larger space at Yorktown Green that was once home to Food Emporium, an anchor tenant in the shopping center. The store has been vacant for over a decade. The space, at 329 Downing Drive, is 45,000 square feet; the specialty grocer's current space at 380 Downing Drive is 38,000 square feet.

According to Yorktown town supervisor Matt Slater, the town's planning board and architectural review boards have reviewed the grocer's plans and had no objections. The town's building department is in the midst of processing the application.

"The expanded Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace is a clear sign of future investment and an important element in our community's economic redevelopment," Slater said in a release. "Restoring vitality to the Yorktown Green shopping center will have a ripple effect throughout our community,"

Uncle Giuseppe's proposed move to Yorktown Green would be part of revitalization efforts at the shopping center. In January 2021, New Jersey-based developer Oster Properties proposed plans for residential and retail space to replace a vacant Kmart.

Yorktown Green is already home to Suburban Wines & Spirits, DAS Auto Parts, a Huntington Learning Center as well as number of restaurants including Taco Bell, Hirame Sushi and Yorktown Grille.

"We have not been given a hard open date at this point in time," Slater said, "but we're very excited to see Uncle Giuseppe's expand their footprint in Yorktown."

New way to get groceries in New Rochelle

New Rochelle's ShopRite is getting ready to unveil a new way to grocery shop: contactless pods.

The new concept, named the QuickCollect GO! POD, is a first for the east coast, according to a ShopRite press release.

The pods will allow shoppers to order groceries online and pick their order up from an outdoor pod. Once the order is placed, the customer is sent a "unique pickup code." When the order is ready to pick up, the customer receives a text message with a QR code.

At the store, customers scan their code and access their groceries from the "pods," which are temperature controlled and self-service.

"The QuickCollect GO! POD will make it even easier for our shoppers at the New Rochelle store to pick up their online orders," Steve Savas, president of ShopRite Supermarkets, Inc., said. "It's a self-checkout and pickup for online orders that's done right outside the store. We are excited to be the first grocer on the East Coast with this technology."
