PorchFest concerts, Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair kick off busy weekend

Looking to stroll through an historic neighborhood and watch live music? Or maybe flip and fly and eat food on a stick? Either way, Jacksonville has you covered this weekend with PorchFest and the opening of the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair.

PorchFest

PorchFest had bad luck with weather last year but is back on for Saturday in Springfield.
PorchFest had bad luck with weather last year but is back on for Saturday in Springfield.

Twenty or so live musical acts, a drag show and the Jaguars drumline are on the bill for Saturday's PorchFest, which sees the streets of Springfield turned into an open-air concert venue, front porches converted into stages and fans sitting on the lawn to watch their favorites.

The event is held on the east side of North Main Street, between 3rd and 8th streets, with the headquarters and starting point at Sesquicentennial Park. It's free and venues are within easy walking distance of one another. The streets will be closed to traffic during the festival, which runs from noon to 8 p.m.

Bring a chair so you can sit and watch the music, and you can bring your pet along as long as it's on a leash. But don't bring your own beer — outside alcohol isn't allowed, and those who wish to drink must check in at the park to get a wristband. Parking is available at the FSCJ Downtown Campus off Laura Street.

Jacksonville Fair

The Jacksonville Fair runs through Nov. 13.
The Jacksonville Fair runs through Nov. 13.

If this isn’t the final time the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair is held in its traditional spot in the heart of the Jacksonville Sports Complex, it’s close to the last one. Plans are afoot to move the fair to a spot on the Westside but, for this year at least, you can still find rides, cattle shows, racing pigs, concerts, cake-baking contests and a trash art competition right where you always have, in the shadow of TIAA Bank Field, 121 Financial Ballpark and VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.

The fair runs through Nov. 13, with rides suitable for kids and rides better suited for adventurous souls. A seven-foot-tall robot will stroll the grounds greeting fairgoers, and a mobile glass studio, craft beer lounge and an aviary with hundreds of parakeets will be on hand so you don't get bored. There's a slate of free concerts, but not as many big names as the fair has attracted in the past.

Fair admission at the gate is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and kids age 6-12, and half-price tickets are available online at jacksonvillefair.com.  Armbands that give you access to unlimited mechanical rides are another $30 at the door, but you can get the armband and admission for $25 online.

Here's the daily schedule:

Thursday, Nov. 3: 5-11 p.m., free admission with purchase of $15 ride armband, LPT concert at 8 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 4: 3-11 p.m., seniors 65 and older admitted free, Priscilla Block concert at 8 p.m.
