Exactly two months remain until the start of the 2022-23 MHSAA girls basketball season.

Ryan Rossi can hardly wait. And who can blame him?

Rossi has been hired as the new coach of Port Huron Northern girls basketball. Athletic director Jason Kasparian made the announcement on Twitter Tuesday. Rossi replaces Kevin Landschoot, who stepped down after four seasons.

"I'm really excited," Rossi said. "It's been a goal of mine for awhile to be a varsity head coach at a program that has such a nice pedigree, a lot of success and a good environment around it. It's very exciting."

He most recently served as the girls basketball coach at Capac last year. Prior to that, Rossi spent three years as an assistant at Yale, where he still teaches. He's also a graduate of Henry Ford II High School in Sterling Heights and Grand Valley State University.

"I'm looking to bringing a lot of energy," Rossi said. "I'm a pretty big believer that basketball is one of those energy sports. You need to have some fun while you're playing it and express some joy. You'll see a lot of that.

"In practice, I like to get the music going and have a good time while also teaching those values. That's my style. (Fans) can expect a lot of energy, a lot of hard work and a lot of fun to go with it."

The Huskies are coming off a 6-15 season in the rough-and-tumble MAC Red. Northern also graduated four seniors in Jersey McGregor, Abby Landschoot, Grace Schroll and Madison Roberts. It's a relatively young team that will play in the MAC White this season.

"I'm planning on meeting with the players some time next week," Rossi said. "We'll be young, but I'm really excited about the future here and just ready to get going."

Teams can officially begin practice on Nov. 14. The Huskies will open the season at home against Marysville on Dec. 2.
