The Port Huron Yacht Club is celebrating 100 years this weekend.

Activities at the Port Huron Yacht Club will include a flag raising ceremony, a gala, a boat race and fireworks. Commodore Tyson Connolly said the occasion marks a milestone for the yacht club.

"I think there's a great sense of pride and responsibility with our current membership and leadership to maintain and build upon what our previous members and leaders have done before us," he said. "This is a pretty incredible accomplishment."

Celebrations will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday with a flag raising ceremony at the Port Huron Yacht Club, located at 212 Quay St. The activities throughout the weekend are aimed for yacht club members.

After the flag raising ceremony, yacht club members will hold a gala and watch presentations on the club's history. State Rep. Andrew Beeler will be in attendance as well and will present a certificate of recognition from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

The flag raising ceremony is a recent tradition in the Port Huron Yacht Club. It was started in 2021 by past Commodore Pam Walls during John Anter's run as commodore. He said for the 100th anniversary, the ceremony will have all of the past commodores in uniform to help raise the United State, Canadian and Michigan flags.

"It honors all of the flags and the start of the sailing season," Anter said. "It's a nice tradition for the club."

On Sunday, the yacht club will have a family fun day as well as its first boat race of the year. The Blue Water Kick Off Race will start at 11 a.m. at Lakeside Park. Connolly said there are approximately 40 boats in the race.

Although the weekend activities are geared toward yacht club members, the greater community can also celebrate the 100th anniversary. The Port Huron Museum will be unveiling a new exhibit about the Port Huron Yacht Club and its 100 year history on June 16.

Connolly said the greater Port Huron community has shown the yacht club a lot of warmth during its tenure. He said the 100th anniversary is a reflection of how far the club has come, and a glimpse into what it can do in the future.
