Police say a 17-year-old Port Washington High School student was arrested for creating a social media post related to a recent TikTok video challenge making claims of multiple school shootings that were to have occurred Friday, Dec. 17.

The Port Washington Police Department said on its Facebook page Monday that it became aware Dec. 18 "of a social media post that included a photograph with a caption worded to sound like a veiled threat." The department determined the person in the photo was not involved with the post and said that the suspect used an old photo without permission and put the caption on it. The threat was deemed not to be credible.

The department also said the student posted the photo "to make light of the recent TikTok video challenge that made claims that multiple school shootings were to have occurred this past Friday."

Port Washington High School principal Thad Gabrielse said the student is not in school and that the school and the Port Washington Police Department are still investigating the incident.

School was still in session for students Monday.

The arrest comes a few days after Hamilton High School closed Dec. 17 after local students there made similar posts on social media. Hamilton School District administrators said they were unsure if the threats were related to the nationwide TikTok challenge.
