Portage County residents have an opportunity this week to get rid of some of their electronic waste for free.

Portage County Solid Waste is hosting an electronic and small appliance recycling event from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Portage County Transfer Facility, 650 Moore Road in Plover, according to a news release.

Here's what you need to know ahead of the event.

Who can bring items to recycle?

Only Portage County residents will be able to bring items to recycle at this event. Businesses of any size and residents from other counties will be turned away.

How much does it cost?

This collection will be free for people dropping off items. The event is covered by special funding from the electronic recycler.

Is there a limit for items?

Yes. Residents can bring up to 20 items per vehicle.

What types of items will be accepted?

People can bring cable boxes, cables and cords, cameras and camcorders, cellphones, PDAs, chargers, clocks, coffee makers, copiers, printers, scanners, fax machines, desktop computer towers, docking stations, DVD players, Blu-ray players, VHS players, external drives, fans, hair dryers, landline phones, laptops, monitors, MP3 players, iPods, microwaves, projectors, radios, satellite dishes and receivers, servers, stereos and speakers, toasters, all types of TVs, UPS and jump starters, vacuum cleaners, video game consoles and controllers.

Are there any items people cannot bring?

Do not bring any ballasts, batteries, bulbs, lamps, capacitors, gas cylinders, ink and toner cartridges, holiday lights, liquids, medical and radioactive waste, medical and lab equipment, refrigerant-containing appliances, smoke detectors, vape pens, or appliances like stoves, dryers and washing machines. While the Transfer Facility normally accepts trash, bulbs, tires and other items, these will not be accepted at this event.

Where do I go?

The recycling event will be at the Portage County Transfer Facility on Moore Road in Plover. Enter from Twin Towers Drive, then turn west onto Moore Road. When you get there, staff members and signs will direct you to an area where you will take a survey while staff removes items from your vehicle.

What if I can’t make it to the event?

The Portage County Transfer Facility accepts a variety of items year-round for certain fees per item and takes cash, check, Visa, Discover or Mastercard. You can find a list of accepted items on the Portage County website. Items accepted include garbage, electronics, batteries, lightbulbs, appliances, tires and more.
