Porter Ridge High’s Kyler Harris helps West to boys’ East-West all-star basketball win

Porter Ridge’s Kyler Harris scored 16 first-half points Monday night and led the West to a 111-86 romp over the East in the N.C. Coaches’ Association East-West All-Star Game at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Earlier Monday, the East held off a late surge by the West and won the girls’ all-star basketball contest 74-68.

The two games were the first of five all-star contests for graduated seniors scheduled this week in the Greensboro area.

The girls’ and boys’ soccer matches are set for Tuesday night at McPherson Stadium in Brown Summit, and the football all-star game is set for Wednesday evening at Grimsley High in Greensboro.

The girls’ soccer match is set for 6:30 p.m., with the boys’ to follow. Wednesday’s football game has an 8 p.m. kickoff.

West boys roll

Kyler Harris, a 6-1 guard who averaged more than 25 points a game last season at Porter Ridge, helped the West pull away in the first quarter, hitting a pair of 3-pointers to expand his team’s lead from 23-16 to 29-18.

East Mecklenburg’s Jordan Nevill hit a 3-pointer just 10 seconds into the second quarter, building the West’s margin to 34-18. After that, the West maintained a healthy lead for the rest of the night.

Harris scored seven points in the first quarter, nine in the second, and finished with 18 points and four steals. Greensboro Smith’s Markquan Gilbert, who is headed to N.C. Wesleyan, finished with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, earning Most Valuable Player honors.

Nevill finished with nine points, and Charlotte Catholic’s Patrick Tivnan scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Jared Davis, of Seventy-First High, and Lumberton’s B.J. Brockington each scored 16 points for the East.

The West team was coached by East Lincoln’s Jon Hancock and Ardrey Kell’s Mike Craft.

East girls hang on

Skylar White of E.E. Smith High in Fayetteville hit two key free throws in the closing minute, helping her team hold off the West in the girls’ all-star game.

White’s two free throws gave the East a 69-66 lead after the West’s Kyla Bryant, of Salisbury, hit a 3-pointer with 1:21 remaining.

The East led 50-39 midway through the third quarter, but the West began whittling away. The West went on a 10-2 run and got within 63-62 with 3:10 remaining. Lake Norman’s Kirsten Lewis-Williams led that surge with a basket and two free throws.

North Mecklenburg’s Nevaeh Farmer hit a key free throw with 2:15 left, and then Bryant connected on the 3-pointer that left the margin at 1. White’s two free throws and a field goal by Caroline Thiel of Rocky Mount helped the East open the lead.

Purnell Swett’s Kylie Chavis, a 5-10 point guard, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. She finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and five steals.

Bryant led the West with 15 points. Lewis-Williams finished with 12 points, and Farmer scored seven, with five steals.

Shelby’s Ally Hollifield had a big game, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

North Mecklenburg’s Jennifer Baker was one of the two West coaches.
