Portion of Hillside Road closed to vehicular traffic through fall semester

Aug. 12—STORRS/ MANSFIELD — Hillside Road on the University of Connecticut Storrs campus will be closed to vehicular traffic between Glenbrook Road and Jim Calhoun Way starting on Friday and lasting through the Fall 2022 semester.

The closing is a pilot effort to enhance safety and help to make the area friendlier to walkers and bicyclists in the foot traffic- heavy center of campus. The impact of the preliminary closing will be evaluated after the fall semester.

Michael Jednak, UConn's associate vice president of facilities operations, said the road closure could lead to safety improvements that would greatly benefit students.

" We had this plan prior to COVID and, as we go back to a full campus, this is an opportunity to really make a change that is for the safety of our students," he said in a press release.

HuskyGo buses will continue to use the stretch of Hillside Road and there will be no changes to bus routes and schedules. Emergency and service vehicles will also continue to use the road.

The parking lot in front of the Hugh S. Greer Field House will continue to be available to Area 1 permit holders and accessible parking permit holders.

The affected section of Hillside Road will be open to pedestrians and active
