Portion of Homewood Cemetery flooded after heavy rain

A portion of Homewood Cemetery in Pittsburgh is underwater after heavy rain over the weekend.

11 News spoke with a woman who visited the cemetery on Mother’s Day and saw the damage firsthand.

“Imagine coming to see your mom, or you’re trying to see your mom, and there’s a whole bunch of water and you can’t even go see her,” said Erika Newell. “I was a little bit disheartened, honestly, especially for the people whose moms aren’t here today.”

Newell told Channel 11 that she and her family went to the cemetery to lay flowers at her great-grandmother’s grave and saw the flooded area on their way back to their car.

“It was a puddle. It looked like a lake,” Newell said. “I looked at my mom and said that looks like a lake. Then I moved in closer, and you see the headstones were covered in water. There were two kids who came down by the water and started playing.”

Newell said the cemetery was packed with other people trying to pay their respects to their mothers who are no longer here.

She said she could only imagine how the family members feel seeing their loved ones’ graves underwater.

11 News reached out to cemetery management, and we’re waiting for a response.
