Portland, Maine much happier than Portland, Oregon, study shows

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — If you’re looking for happiness, you might be living in the wrong Portland.

According to WalletHub, Portland, Maine ranks well above Portland, Ore. on its 2024 list of the “happiest cities in America.” WalletHub measured the happiness of all the major cities in the U.S. using various metrics related to issues like job satisfaction, physical and emotional well-being, depression rates, weather, income and more.

Portland, Ore. ranked in the upper half of the list, coming in as the 67th happiest city in the U.S. between Austin, Texas and Riverside, Calif. However, Portland, Maine was named one of the happiest cities in the country. According to WalletHub the East Coast Portland is the 17th happiest city in the U.S.

“As this study aims to illustrate, moving to a certain city may help you be more content,” the WalletHub study reads. “WalletHub drew upon the various findings of positive-psychology research in order to determine which among more than 180 of the largest U.S. cities is home to the happiest people in America.”

Portland ranked second to Seattle on the list of the happiest cities in the Pacific Northwest. Other regional cities on the list include Seattle (#18), Tacoma (#89) Vancouver, Wash. (#100), Spokane (#124) and Salem (#159).
