Portland podcaster, daughter of state senator excited about return to ‘Jeopardy!’ stage

(PORTLAND TRIBUNE) — Portland’s Mira Hayward had a lot of fun the first time on “Jeopardy!,” competing against fellow players and pocketing $37,000 — money put in savings, by the way.

The second time around happened to be just as enjoyable. Hayward returned from taping in Los Angeles with stories to tell — and having missed several days of Portland winter weather. She stayed in a nice hotel — courtesy of the show — and ate meals at the studio commissary. Hayward had a good time being around fellow “Jeopardy!” contestants and talking with host Ken Jennings.

Of course, Hayward cannot reveal how she performed on the quiz show. Her game airs Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. KATU (2) as part of the “Jeopardy! Champions Wildcard” tournament. (The “wildcard” champ moves on to the “Tournament of Champions” shows.) It’ll be almost a year to the day — Feb. 9-10, 2023 — when Hayward won two games on the show.

“It was amazing. Very surreal going back,” said Hayward, 28. “ I didn’t expect how fun it would be. I was really nervous. It was so much fun, everybody was extremely nice. Everything’s so streamlined, you’re on stage and playing the same game you watch every night at home.”

Hayward is a Catlin Gabel School and Harvard University graduate, and is the daughter of state Sen. Elizabeth Steiner, who serves the 17th district (Northwest Portland and Beaverton).

Hayward was a writer with the history podcast “Noble Blood,” which tells strange stories of royalty.
