Police in Portland, Oregon, said they used “inert smoke canisters” in an attempt to disperse protesters in the early hours of August 22 during ongoing demonstrations in the city. A riot was declared shortly after 1 am.
Footage posted from the scene shows clouds of smoke filling the air. In a statement, police said nine arrests were made, adding that police cars were heavily damaged and officers injured after they were targeted “by thrown bottles, eggs, and green lasers toward their eyes.”
Police said 150 to 200 protesters were present, with some carrying wooden shields, as seen in this footage, and “various crowd control munitions were used” to disperse the protesters after a riot was declared.
