PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — It’s been a dark and cold winter for the greater Portland, Vancouver area, but that changes Sunday night.
Temperatures continue to warm as Portland sees its first 5 p.m. hour sunset of the year on Sunday night. The sun will dip below the horizon at 5:01 p.m. on January 21. This will be the first sunset in the 5 p.m. hour since November 4, 2023. That’s when most of the country entered Standard Time again.
Later sunsets and earlier sunrises will continue to add to the total hours of daylight. On average, Portland will gain anywhere from two to three minutes of daylight each day until the summer solstice on June 20, 2024.
This light at the end of the tunnel comes as Portland warms above freezing this week, melting the ice and snow seen across the region over the last week.
