Portsmouth police make arrest 1 year after teen’s shooting death

Portsmouth police apprehended a 25-year-old man one year after he was charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a teenager.

Jamel Raiquon Jones was arrested Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. in Portsmouth. He was charged with first-degree murder of a 16-year-old boy and two weapons offenses for a shooting that occurred in the Park View neighborhood on May 31, 2021.

A spokesperson did not immediately return a request for additional details surrounding Jones’ arrest.

Portsmouth police have been searching for Jones since June 7, 2021, when he was charged in connection with the shooting.

According to the original release, officers responded to a reported shooting May 31, 2021, around 2 p.m. near the 1400 block of Crawford Parkway. At the scene, a 16-year-old boy was found with a fatal gunshot wound.
