Portsmouth, Lincoln and Smithfield win in baseball on Monday

BASEBALL

Division I

Portsmouth 3, South Kingstown 2

Patriots pitchers allowed just five hits as they edged the Rebels in a Division I showdown. Portsmouth's John Mass gave up five hits and two runs over six innings, striking out five and walking one.  Oliver Rey threw one inning of relief and earned the save. South Kingstown's Rian O’Rourke went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out three in the loss. Portsmouth's Rey and Matt Nolan each managed multiple hits. Conor Kelly went 2-for-3 to lead South Kingstown.

Lincoln 11, North Kingstown 3

Lincoln starter Joey Conti pitched six strong innings, allowing only two earned runs, while helping his own cause with two hits. He also scored a run and stole two bases to help Lincoln upend North Kingstown. Also having good nights at the dish were Ryan Allen and Caden Specht. Both players went 3-for-5 and each belted a home run.

Smithfield 2, Moses Brown 1

Jackson Chamberlin fired a no-hitter and his offense came to life in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Sentinels edged the Quakers. Chris Lopez and Ryan Flynn dropped a pair of bunts to plate Bradyn Shadoian and Ryan Kennedy, as Smithfield overcame a late 1-0 deficit. That made a winner of Chamberlin, a freshman who struck out five and rode his defense to the finish. Chamberlin allowed a lone run in the top of the first before blanking the Quakers over his final six innings. Smithfield improved to 2-3 in league play.  “His heart was pounding,” Smithfield coach Jimmy Connell said. “I didn’t think he was going to get out of the first. He settled right down.”
