Portsmouth residents to participate in Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk

PORTSMOUTH — Eight residents from Portsmouth will participate in the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk presented by Hyundai on Sunday, Oct. 2.

Sally Elshout, Holly Collins, Jake Logan, Patti Spindel, Donna Gladhill, Whitney Miller, Nicholas Zaricki, and Jen Spindel, along with thousands of other walkers, will participate in the iconic annual event that will unite the community to raise funds to support all forms of adult and pediatric care and cancer research at the nation’s premier cancer center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  The Jimmy Fund Walk has raised more than $155 million for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in its 33-year history.

Samantha le Clair, age seven, and Jen Spindel will participate as a Walk Hero for the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. Heroes are matched with Jimmy Fund Walk teams to give participants an opportunity to connect with patients. Samantha was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor and is matched with Team Hyundai. “Everyone at Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund are absolutely amazing and help make all this so much more bearable,” le Clair says. “My hobbies are boxing and everything animal related.”

Spindel was diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer. Spindel walks on her Match Team, Young and Strong. “I am inspired by Dana-Farber's ongoing research into cancer treatments and work toward a cure,” Spindel writes. “The compassion and kindness of the entire care team has given me hope and helped me make it through treatment.”

14th Annual Apple Harvest Day 5k Road Race registration now open

DOVER — Apple Harvest Day will continue its tradition of kicking off the Seacoast’s premier autumn street festival with a 5k road race on Saturday, Oct. 1, starting at 8:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Street. The USATF certified course winds through historic downtown Dover and is perfect for advanced runners as well as beginners and families. Once you finish the race, be sure to stick around for hard apple cider provided by North Country Cider! Each runner over the age of 21 will receive two complimentary beverages, with non-alcoholic apple cider available for minors. Children in strollers do not need to be registered for the race. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers, as well as to the first Dover male and female runner to cross the finish line.

Cost is $30 for adults age 21 and over, $20 for runners under the age of 21. Children in strollers do not need to be registered. In-person registration will be available at the Chamber until Sept. 30, or you can register on the day of the race at the start line. Rochester, N.H. Elks #1393 conduct Lodge Youth Soccer Shoot

On Sunday, Sept. 18, the Rochester Elks held its annual Lodge Youth Soccer Shoot. 18 local children in the various age groups participated in the event, held at 12 p.m. at the Roger Allen Park in Rochester.

ROCHESTER — On Sunday, Sept. 18, the Rochester Elks held its annual Lodge Youth Soccer Shoot. 18 local children in the various age groups participated in the event, held at 12 p.m. at the Roger Allen Park in Rochester. The event was chaired by Jeff Rasmussen, Lecturing Knight. Lodge volunteers were as follows: Deanna Souza, Jeanne Bernard, Janice Tagen, Harry Tagen, Matt Sanborn, John and Julie Stevens, Peter and Tisha Ducharme, Rod Gaskell, Don Chesnel and Teresa Rasmussen.

The winners from each age group are as follows:

These winners will now compete in the State Contest, to be held in Lebanon, N.H. on Sunday, Oct. 2.

The Elks Soccer Shoot program consists of two different contests open to girls and boys: Five Goal Contest: consists of a series of five goals, decreasing in size from 48 inches to 17 inches. The five goal contest is for U-8, which includes ages seven years old and younger. Grid Goal Contest: consists of a full-size goal sectioned off so points can be scored when the ball is kicked into certain sections. The age groups that use this goal are U-10,ages eight to nine, U-12, ages 10 to 11, U-14, ages 12 to 13, and U-16 ages 14 and 15.

Soccer is one of the fastest growing youth activities in the country. The Elks soccer shoot Program is geared to coincide with this sport phenomenon. From toddlers to teens, in our large urban centers to our small suburban settings, soccer is becoming the sport of choice for our youth. This program is the kind of sporting event to help keep our youth focused and away from undesirable activities.
