Portsmouth, Suffolk suspend athletic activities; all South Hampton Roads schools have paused sports

Portsmouth Public Schools announced Wednesday that all athletic practices and conditioning workouts are suspended until Jan. 4.

Vincent Pugh, the school division’s athletic director, said in a release the decision to implement the delay is the result of the rising number of coronavirus cases in the region.

“The Hampton Roads athletic directors met recently and we agreed to delay the beginning of basketball until Jan. 11,” Pugh said. “That said, this is an evolving situation that we must monitor daily so that decision may be revisited if positivity rates do not subside.”

In addition, Suffolk suspended winter sports and activities – including practices, workouts and conditioning, and any other activities associated with extracurricular events.

“The school division will review health metrics on December 21, 2020, to determine if a return to competition is safe for both students and staff,” said Anthonette Ward, Suffolk’s community engagement officer. “The school division will review health metrics and data on a week-to-week basis for the return of winter sports and activities.”

With Portsmouth and Suffolk pausing sports, all the South Hampton Roads school divisions are on hold. Virginia Beach and Norfolk are on hold until further notice. Chesapeake is on hold through the week of Jan. 4.
