Portugal is taking over New York City's Times Square. Here’s how

NEW YORK CITY – Portugal is taking over New York City's Times Square on a daily basis.

TAP Air Portugal is promoting Portugal on the screens of Times Square, with a video featuring images from around the country and information about the airline.

The 15-second video will be shown daily until the end of 2024. Times Square visitors are getting a glimpse of what Portugal and TAP have to offer three times per hour or 72 times a day.

“In total, the corner of 46th Street and 7th Avenue in Times Square will be the stage for 32,000 spots with messages from TAP and Portugal, which will reach an estimated audience of 730 million New Yorkers and visitors,” according to a statement from TAP officials.

The video will be changed over time and adapted to specific festive periods and promotions.

“With this investment, TAP is consolidating its role as a major promoter of Portugal and the country’s biggest showcase in the world,” TAP officials said.

TAP currently connects Portugal to six U.S. destinations: Boston, New York, Miami, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington D.C.

Fantastic World of the Portuguese Sardine opens store in Times Square

The Fantastic World of the Portuguese Sardinechain has opened its first store outside of Portugal at 2 Times Square on Aug. 21.

Dedicated to Portugal’s beloved sardine, the new space offers canned sardines in a variety of flavors, from spicy to smoked.

A concept developed by the O Valor do Tempo business group, The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardine opened its first store seven years ago and currently has 21 stores in Portugal.

Now, the company wants to expand its growing empire internationally by starting to take a bite of the Big Apple.

“We set off to live the American dream, bringing one of Portugal’s most important business cards to Times Square: canned food,” wrote António Quaresma, president of the O Valor do Tempo group, on Linkedin.

Like the Portuguese stores, the New York space is set up like a sardine time machine, with cans arranged chronologically by year, from 1916 to the present.

But don’t worry, these aren’t the actual years they were tinned, but rather a marketing gimmick. You can, for example, buy a can with your birth year or the year you got married.

“In this fantastic world that the city that never sleeps now hosts, the sea is the illustrious master of ceremonies that celebrates the greatness of Portuguese canned goods,” added Quaresma. “Our spotlight falls on the fishermen and women whose hands work masterfully in an art that remains alive and true to its origins. Our audience is now the world. Let the magic begin.”
