The Portuguese grapes in this wine offer big taste and great value | Phil Your Glass

At $8.99, the 2020 Casal Garcia Vinho Verde from Portugal is an incredible value for white wine.
At $8.99, the 2020 Casal Garcia Vinho Verde from Portugal is an incredible value for white wine.

As long as the wine is good and the price is right, does it really matter if we can’t pronounce the names of the grapes?

Casal Garcia is made from indigenous grapes grown in the Vinho Verde region of northern Portugal.

Good luck trying to pronounce trajadura, loureiro, arinto and fernão pires. I’ll be sipping on a glass of this lovely $8.99 white wine while you figure that one out.

All we really need to know is that this is a ridiculously delicious wine for the price. Now, pass me the bowl of marcona almonds and pistachios while I take another sip.

Thanks to Charles Chambliss, wine guru at Cornerstone Market in Munroe Falls, for suggesting this bottle. The citrus aromas and creamy tangerine flavors are a thing of beauty.

Scoop a little DeLallo muffaletta olive salad on a cracker for an easy and tasty appetizer to pair. Heinen’s brand brie cheese with a little fig jam is also quite tasty with this wine.

A few freshly rolled vegetable spring rolls from the Market District in Cuyahoga Falls were also tasty, and the wine even paired nicely with the tangy Mae Ploy sweet chili dipping sauce. There’s enough acidity to make this an awesome food wine.

"Partilha a alegria," which means "share the joy" in Portuguese, is on every bottle. Pick up a bottle and share it with someone special.

Buy this wine at Cornerstone Market, Krieger’s Market in Cuyahoga Falls, Market District in Cuyahoga Falls and Green, both Mustard Seed Market locations, Acme in North Canton and Canton, Earth Fare in Canton, Heinen’s in Hudson and Montavino Wine Market in Wooster.

Mocktails and cocktails galore

If a dry January was in your plans, you can still enjoy a night out at The Winery at Wolf Creek to try some of their delicious mocktails. They have everything from virgin piña coladas to "Abstinence on the Beach."

Mixed-drink aficionados may want to sign up for the restaurant's cocktail class happening at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 9. MIXXD Beverage Service of Massillon will instruct participants on how to make three different cocktails, including a classic old fashioned, a Wolf Creek sour and a White Lies Giggle Juice, which features Voudoux Vodka, made by Medina's BKO Distillery. Cost is $50 per person.

Tickets can be purchased on Eventbrite.

Value wine tasting

I will be hosting a value wine tasting at Beau’s Market in Copley from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 26. Cost is $39 per person for six wines with food pairings by Chef Beau Schmidt. For reservations, call 234-466-7720.

Thank you!

Just a quick note of thanks to everyone who came to the Feast of the 7 Delicious wine tasting last month at the Fairlawn Hilton. Almost $11,000 was raised for the Halle Schmidt Foundation, which provides scholarships each year to Copley High School students entering the medical profession. Cheers to all who bought raffle tickets and donated to this worthy cause.
