Possible Derecho Sweeps Across Great Plains
A possible derecho – defined as a widespread, long-lived, straight-line wind storm – swept across the Great Plains on May 12, bringing wind gusts of more than 90 mph in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service, for a storm to meet the definition of a derecho, it needs to have wind gusts of at least 58 mph and cause an area of damage more than 240 miles long and 60 miles wide.
The Washington Post reported the storms hit parts of Iowa, Kansas, Wisconsin, the Dakotas, Minnesota, and Nebraska.
