How will possible pilot strikes impact your travel plans, prices?

As the school year is wrapping up, it’s time for summer travel.

But what about possible pilot strikes that have been discussed and those TSA lines at Atlanta’s airport?

Atlanta-based travel agent Allison Medor designs and implements travel plans for people all across metro Atlanta and beyond.

“Summer travel is in high demand. It is the busiest that we’ve seen. Obviously past COVID, but even before COVID it’s unprecedented,” Medor said.

“Are people still seeking that bucket list trip?” Channel 2′s Justin Farmer asked.

“I think so,” Medor answered. “I guess the luxury of being able to access the world that was taken away from us for so long is back in our control and people really want to get out there.”

Record demand has dramatically elevated air and hotel prices.

“Prices are incredibly high. Hotel prices are high, airfare is high. We’re in a huge supply and demand situation. But it doesn’t seem to be stopping people,” Medor said.

Then there’s the talk of a possible pilot strike at some of the airlines.

Channel 2 Consumer Advisor Clark Howard says the strikes won’t involve Delta and most likely wouldn’t hit until later in the year.

“I think it’s more likely if they don’t reach a labor deal that the strikes, if any emerge, would happen sometime this fall,” Howard said.

And what about the stories of people missing their flights, stuck in security lines?

“The security lines in Atlanta are absolutely horrific because the TSA has trouble keeping the workforce in Atlanta because our job market is so strong in Atlanta, even as the U.S. economy slows,” Howard said. “Then it leads to more turnover with the TSA.”

Medor says to get to the airport extra early and to save money, be flexible about where you go.

Howard adds that if you’re looking for fares after August 15, you’ll find much better deals.
