Post 79 sets Veterans Day Breakfast

Nov. 10—Connie Clemons doesn't want any veterans to miss out on a free buffet breakfast because they can't bring their spouse, children or other family members.

That's why both veterans and their family members are welcome at a free Veterans Day breakfast at American Legion Post 79 at 400 S. Second St. in McAlester.

Clemons invited veterans and their family to come to a buffet-style breakfast on Veterans Day, which is Saturday, Nov. 11.

It's set from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. — starting an hour earlier than originally planned.

Clemons said the breakfast had originally been planned to begin at 7 a.m., but when several veterans told her they could not come at 7 because they had to be at work by that time, she moved the opening time to 6 a.m.

She said all veterans are invited to participate.

"You don't have to be a member of the American Legion and your family members are welcome to come with you," she said.

Post 79 Commander Jim Barton said the post decided to hold a breakfast because other veterans organizations were serving lunches.

Included on the menu are eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy and pancakes.

Clemons, who is president and treasurer of the Post 79 Auxiliary, said the free breakfast is offered as a service to veterans.

She's familiar with the menu because she plans on doing most of the cooking herself.

She herself comes a family of veterans who served in the U.S. Navy. They include her husband, David Clemons, her daughter, Krystal Clemons, and Connie's father, Cecil Reeder.

Her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ray Clemons and Carol Clemons, are U.S. Navy Veterans as well, Connie Clemons said.

How did the Navy miss her?

"I guess someone had to keep the home front going," she said.
