The Post-Crescent goes all-out on its Thanksgiving edition. Here's what to expect

APPLETON — Every year, The Post-Crescent pulls out all the stops for our main Thanksgiving edition.

The edition, which will hit newsstands and doorsteps on Wednesday, will be full of news, sports, games, puzzles and Black Friday advertising inserts, ready to keep you occupied over the holiday.

Here are some of the highlights from what we have slated:

  • Natalie Eilbert, our mental health reporter, will open the edition with an interesting feature on the science behind gratitude. It's one thing to say you're thankful for something because you're eight and grandma's pressuring everyone at dinner to say something nice before you start eating, but it turns out there's actually a chemical reaction in our brains that can be triggered by embracing thankfulness.

  • The Green Bay Packers will meet the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving, playing in Detroit, and in our sports section, we will include everything you need to get hyped for that game: a full game-day preview, including five things to watch and our staff predictions. We’ll also have a detailed look at all of the sports on TV over the long weekend, from college matchups to the NFL.

  • Our sports editors tell me we'll also have a main story on the top girls basketball players in the Appleton area in the Wednesday edition, with plans to run a companion piece on the top boys basketball players on Friday.

  • Jelissa Burns, our new food & drink reporter, leveraged her background in local business reporting to put together a list of restaurants located either near or on the way to the Fox Valley's hottest shopping spots: College Avenue and the Fox River Mall. As she notes in the story, you spent time spending money on your friends and family, the least you can do is treat yourself. You earned it.

  • Burns' reporting is part of a larger series of shop local stories our business reporters will put in print throughout the week, and will be preceded by a story in Sunday's (today's) edition about what seasonal changes are coming to the Fox River Mall and followed by a look at Small Business Saturday shopping in Friday's edition. Both of the shopping stories are courtesy of Buzz reporter Alexandria Bursiek Kloehn.

  • For those already ready to look past Thanksgiving, Mara Wegner, the Post-Crescent's editorial assistant, has assembled a list of holiday events set around the region so you can get into the seasonal spirit and deck our your calendar with lights shows, concerts, holiday shopping and even a ballet.

  • Additionally, I'll offer some words of thanks to the donors who opened their wallets and chipped in to our annual Stock the Shelves campaign and helped to feed neighbors across eastern Wisconsin. We'll also run a spread listing and thanking each donor.

  • Plus, don't miss the big crossword puzzle, my personal favorite part of the Thanksgiving edition. I've never been able to best it without giving in to Google, but it is the windmill I tilt against each year.

From all of us at The Post-Crescent, we hope you enjoy this edition and we hope that you have a happy, warm and cheerful Thanksgiving holiday.
