Post Falls police officer, 36, dies on duty after heart attack

Oct. 23—A Post Falls Police officer died Sunday night after a heart attack while on duty, police said in a statement.

Nicholas McDaniel, 36, was found slumped over in his patrol car after he failed to reply to a "status check." Officers who responded started CPR until paramedics arrived, the Post Falls Police Department said in a Monday news release.

McDaniel was taken to Kootenai Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, the news release said.

McDaniel worked in Post Falls for a little under a year after spending 13 years in Hawaii. Police are asking the community to keep his family in their thoughts, as he was engaged to be married and had children.

Post Falls Mayor Ron Jacobson wrote in a statement on McDaniel's death, "We are proud of the time that Officer McDaniel gave serving our citizens and fellow colleagues at the City of Post Falls. There are no words that can make this loss easier to bear for Officer McDaniel's family and colleagues. As a city, we mourn Officer McDaniel's death deeply and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues."
