CF supports Hurricane Ian survivors

In the wake of Hurricane Ian, the College of Central Florida has delivered generators, gas cans and extension cords to Daytona State College, which experienced major flooding and power loss, a press release from CF said.

Later, the Career and Professional Employees Council organized a supply drive that collected water, nonperishable food, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products that on Oct. 10 were taken to State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota. The trailer also included donations from Florida Gateway College, Santa Fe College and Lake-Sumter State College.

CF also collected supplies that were included with a relief shipment organized by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints aids Hurricane Ian survivors

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently provided 13 semi-truck loads of equipment, including chainsaws, generators, hand trucks, debris sleds, wheelbarrows, tarps, water and other needed supplies for those recovering from Hurricane Ian, according to a press release from the church.

“Events such as Hurricane Ian provide opportunities to follow the example of Jesus Christ by extending a loving and helping hand to those in need,” Darrell K. Brantley, a regional leader for the church in Ocala, said in the release.

Technology project launched by the Senior Resource Foundation of Ocala

The Senior Resource Foundation of Ocala has launched a new project, “Seniors Introduction To Technology,” according to a press release from the foundation.

Funding from Florida Blue – Medicare has enabled the purchase of Amazon Fire tablets and instruction for 30 seniors living in senior housing, the release said.

The foundation is dedicated to refining, enhancing and enriching the lives of older adults.

Dunnellon teacher receives grant for water education project

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (Swiftmud) recently awarded a grant to Nancy Garvin of Dunnellon Elementary School for water resources education projects, according to a press release from the district.

The district granted $107,969 to 58 educators within the district (Citrus, Hernando, Levy, Marion and Sumter counties) as part of the Splash! school grant program, the release said. The program provides up to $3,000 per school to enhance student knowledge of freshwater resources in grades K-12.

First Spirit of Hospice award recipient announced

Hospice of Marion County has announce that board member Ken Daley, president of Tri-Eagle Sales, has received the agency's first Spirit of Hospice award, a press release from HMC said.

"Ken’s untiring commitment to Hospice of Marion County, as well as his public service to other community organizations, makes him a great inaugural recipient of this award,” Hospice of Marion County CEO Rick Bourne said in the release. “Ken joined the HMC board in 2002 and served as board chair in 2009 and 2020. His leadership has helped

Marion County’s hometown hospice become a significant healthcare player.”

The award will be presented on Jan. 13 during the second annual Pinnacle Retirement Advisors’ Spirit of Hospice Golf Tournament.
