Just slightly more than one month after Magic: The Gathering’s The One Ring was found, it has been sold to one of the card game’s biggest fans — American singer-rapper Post Malone.

In a short TikTok video uploaded on 2 Aug by a user identified as Brook Trafton, he shows a meeting with Malone, where he emotionally embraces the celebrity and takes a photo with him while holding the highly coveted card.

Trafton wrote in the captions, “When I found the One Ring, the first person who came to mind was Post Malone. I have played MTG since I was a kid and obviously it would be amazing to keep this card. But for a guy like me, being able to sell it is life changing. I just really hoped it would go to someone who would appreciate it as much as I do.

“This is my dream come true, meeting Post Malone and him buying The One Ring card from me is literally a moment straight out of a fairytale.”

A day before the release of this video, though, Trafton uploaded a clip of The One Ring card which was taken after he first found it back in June.

Post Malone, one of Magic: The Gathering's biggest fan

Malone, 28, is known to be a huge fan of the tabletop game and aside from appearing on Command Zone (one of Magic’s most popular YouTube channels), he has also spent US$800,000 (S$1,068,416) on a Black Lotus and collaborated with Magic’s publisher Wizards of the Coast.

The singer purchased the card for an undisclosed amount.

Additionally, this video marks the first time The One Ring’s finder has put himself in the public eye since news broke on June 30 that the card has been found.

To provide some context, Magic: The Gathering created a The Lord of The Rings set in coordination with Middle-earth Enterprises (MEE) to celebrate the original novels by J.R.R. Tolkien.

This set was released on 23 June and though there are many copies of The One Ring, publisher Wizards also created a singular copy of the card which is unique and serialised. It is covered in gold foil and etched with the original Elvish Black Speech inscription.

Of course, this was to pay homage to the lore of The One Ring held by the Dark Lord Sauron, which rules over all the other Rings.

Prior to it being found, the highest bounty on the card was from a reseller in Spain, who offered 2 million euros and a paid trip to Valencia.

The card was confirmed to have been found, in Canada, on 30 July with a PSA grade of Mint 9.

In an interview with CBC, published 3 July, the then-anonymous seller said, “My hands were literally shaking. I couldn't believe it was real. These things don't happen to people like me.”

He also affirmed that he wouldn't be quitting his day job despite the unexpected windfall. According to media reports then, he and his legal representation said they were still “listening to potential offers”.

Now, we know that there was always only one buyer in mind for The One Ring.
