Is the post office open? Garbage getting collected? What to know for MLK Jr. Day

Whether you consider Martin Luther King Jr. Day a day of service, a day to learn about the assassinated civil rights leader or just a day without work or school, stores consider it a day when you have time to go shopping.

So, the malls and Publix and Walmart and Navarro will be open for your consumer and medical needs. But this is an official federal and state holiday, so some of those public services that normally happen on a Monday will not be happening this Monday.

Here’s what to know:

Garbage

Miami: No garbage, bulky trash or recycling pickup.

Miami-Dade: Recycling will be collected. Garbage will not. The offices as well as the trash and recycling centers will be closed.

Broward: Service as usual for Broward Municipal Services District customers. The county landfill is closed.

Fort Lauderdale: Regular service.

All others, check with your municipality.

U.S. Postal Service

Offices closed, no mail delivery.

Mass Transit

Miami-Dade: Metrobus, Metrorail, Metromover running on a regular weekday schedule.

Broward: Buses will run on a modified weekday service schedule. You can get trip-planning help from Fixed Route and Paratransit customer service representatives 7 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. at 954-357-8400 (TTY 954-357-8302). The customer service centers also will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Broward Main Terminal in downtown Fort Lauderdale; Lauderhill Transit Center; and from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Northeast Transit Center in Pompano Beach.

Tri-rail: Regular weekday schedule.

Banks

The Federal Reserve: Closed.

Bank branches: Likely closed so check yours.

Stock Markets

New York Stock Exchange: Closed.

Nasdaq: Closed.

Libraries

Miami-Dade: Closed, but you can still use online services.

Broward: Closed, but you can still search the online catalog.

Schools, Courts

Closed in Miami-Dade and Broward
