Post offices, DMV, banks: What will be open and what will be closed on Juneteenth?

On Monday, June 19, we honor and celebrate the day when the last enslaved Americans, nearly a quarter of a million of them in Galveston, Texas, were finally told they were free and slavery was officially over in the United States. Although Black Americans have celebrated it since 1866, President Joe Biden recognized Juneteenth as a national holiday in 2021.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday, but so far only about half of the states recognize it as an official holiday. New York is one of them, and Juneteenth is observed as both a state and a federal holiday.

Does mail get delivered on Juneteenth?

Mostly, no. All U.S. post offices will be closed Monday and there will be no regular mail delivery.

However, according to their Operations Policy, holiday delivery will be in effect so you may see some Express Critical, premium or same-day packages arriving, and some Amazon and Walmart deliveries may still show up on your doorstep.

Is UPS open on Juneteenth? How about FedEx?

While some UPS locations were closed for Juneteenth last year, they'll be open Monday according to their holiday schedule and pickup and delivery services will be available. All FedEx services will be open.

Are banks closed on Juneteenth?

Most banks follow the Federal Reserve's holiday schedule and close for Juneteenth. The largest banks in New York such as Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase Bank, and JPMorgan Chase & Co, will be closed Monday, as will credit unions such as First Choice Financial Federal Credit Union and Municipal Credit Union. ATMs and ATM branches will still be operating normally.

Is the stock market open on Juneteenth?

No. The U.S. Stock Market, including the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will close at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, June 16, and will not open again until 9:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday. June 20.

Are government offices open on Juneteenth?

All New York State and nonessential federal offices will be closed.

Will the DMV be open on Juneteenth in New York?

No. All state-run DMV offices are closed Monday including Rockland and Westchester.

Are courts closed on Juneteenth?

All federal courthouses will be closed. So will New York courts.

Do I have trash pickup?

Unless you have received a notice stating otherwise, if your garbage day is normally Monday, you will need to put out your trash.

Will restaurants be closed on Juneteenth? Will McDonald's be open?

Major and local restaurants will likely be open Monday for regular hours, along with grocery and convenience stores. Many chains such as Starbucks offer employees the option of taking the day off or getting holiday pay but locations should be open normal hours. Major fast food chains such as McDonald's, Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell and KFC all will be open the usual times. But call ahead to be sure.

What retail stores will be closed on Juneteenth?

While some national chains such as Target, Best Buy and Nike recognize Juneteenth as a national holiday and offer employees paid time off, with some corporate headquarters closing for the day, most retail locations and malls will be open.
