Post readers respond: COVID waiver for tennis star, Novak Djokovic, an absurd idea

Refusal to get COVID vaccination cost tennis star Novak Djokovic chance to play in the U.S.

Laws preventing people who choose to refuse to be vaccinated from entering our country in the midst of an epidemic are only basic common sense. Why should we waive the law for a tennis player who is well aware of the law and without any good reason wants to ignore it? We are in the midst of a COVID epidemic that has killed over 1.1 million Americans, roughly 87,000 here in Florida, and we still have almost one third of the population unvaccinated because the leader of the Republican Party has made treating this disease a political issue. We are now experiencing over 500 deaths and 2,000 people being hospitalized per day and there is no end in sight.

After COVID pandemic, can childcare recover?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when schools and daycares closed, it not only caused parents to become teachers but they no longer had places for their children to go. When preschools closed, many teachers had to cope with being laid off, having to find new careers. Childcare providers had a big decision: to either stay, open or close their establishments. Nearly 16,000 childcare centers and licensed family childcare programs across the country closed permanently between December 2019 and March 2021. Most of these closures were due to increased operating costs and a drop in enrollment. My question is, will childcare ever go back to the way it was before COVID-19?

Cerabino misses mark on constitutional carry

I always enjoyed Frank Cerabino’s comical take on things. I hate to be the bearer of bad news about Frank’s take on the proposed constitutional carry but the states that do issue carry permits rarely require any training whatsoever. In the states in which I’ve resided, a person is required to take a three-hour course, usually offered at gun shows, that explains both the safety issues and the liability issues. Participants never handle, let alone shoot, a firearm. So never assume that a person with a permit actually knows how to use one.

Freedom... or fiefdom?

Gov. Ron DeSantis has proudly announced that we all live in the "Free State of Florida." It is believed that a much more accurate way to describe our state is the "Fiefdom of Florida," harking back to medieval times where a feudal lord was the all powerful leader of the fiefdom with absolute and total control. Dissent was not tolerated. Republicans have overwhelming majorities in both the Florida House and Senate and whatever DeSantis proclaims becomes law. The "Free State of Florida" really means the Governor and the Republicans are free to enact any legislation they deem fit, regardless of the rights and/or desires of the remaining Floridians.

Trump vs DeSantis: Two political figures. Two political speeches. Two diverging brands.
