Heavy, disruptive snows spreading into Quebec for Monday

Quebec will bear the brunt of a dynamic storm brewing south of the border, with conditions going downhill late Sunday and disruptive weather continuing into the day Monday.

Precipitation that started as rain on Sunday will change over in a hurry as cold air wraps around the storm overnight. Some areas will see hefty accumulations by the end of Monday. The heavy, wet snow will bring the threat for power outages to the hardest-hit areas.

WINTER 2024: El Niño will play a critical role in the weeks ahead

We’ll see rain transition over to snow for downtown Montreal by late Sunday night.

Snow will continue through the morning commute here before tapering off from west to east by Monday afternoon, so plan ahead for slick roads and slow going if you have to travel on Monday morning. Totals of 5-10 cm are possible around Metro Montreal, with higher amounts possible east into Monteregie.

Folks around Quebec City will see snowfall totals vary greatly depending on elevation. The capital city itself stands to receive as little as 5-10 cm from this storm at sea level, with much more expected to fall across the local ski resorts. Totals of up to 30 cm are possible in the mountains.

Anyone planning to travel through Quebec on Monday—especially during the morning commute—should plan for rapidly changing conditions as temperatures fall and rain gives way to snow. Slick roads and delays are likely as the wet snow piles up through the day.

The weight of the wet snow on tree limbs and power lines will lead to a risk for power outages in areas that see the deepest accumulations. Keep your devices charged and prepare in advance in case the lights go out.
