Heavy rain, severe storms sweeping through Quebec on Thursday

The week got off to a soaking start in Quebec, with one community seeing its rainiest August day on record. After a brief break from the unsettled conditions, thunderstorms are back for our Thursday and more unsettled conditions are possible this weekend.

Thursday's storm potential will cover a large swath of Quebec, with heavy rainfall, large hail, and strong wind gusts the main threats. A funnel cloud spotted north of Mirabel prompted a brief tornado warning around 3:00 p.m. local time on Thursday.

Locations: Southern Quebec

Timing: Through the afternoon and evening hours

Weather: Thunderstorms will persist across southern Quebec through the afternoon and evening hours on Thursday. We’ve seen multiple severe thunderstorm warnings amid very heavy rainfall rates and localized flooding in the National Capital Region.

Thursday’s strongest storms could produce strong wind gusts and nickel-size hail in addition to the heavy rainfall. The downpours could affect the evening commute as this system moves up the St. Lawrence through the evening.

The rain will continue for central and eastern parts of the province into Friday as well, further adding to the above-average rainfall this month.

Additional rainfall in this region could also bring the threat of pooling, ponding, and localized flood risks. This rain falls on the heels of Quebec City seeing its rainiest August day on record.
