Potential candidates file papers to fill New Bedford's vacant Ward 3 council seat

NEW BEDFORD — Eight residents have submitted nomination papers to fill former Councilor Hugh Dunn's vacant Ward 3 seat, though one has since decided not to run.

Submitting the nomination paperwork to the Board of Election Commissioners before the 5 p.m. deadline Tuesday, and in the order they were listed, were:

Jacob J. Ventura, 24 Logan St., Kathy M. Dehner, 1259 Rockdale Ave., Robert C. Bromley, 73 Rowe St., John F. Robinson Jr., 195 Wilbur St., Shawn Oliver, 63 Upton St., Robert Cabral, 14 Beetle St., Genesis Galan, 80 Trinity St., Carmen Amaral, 270 Caroline St.

Galan has since opted not to run, she said.

Candidates were required to file at least 50 signatures from resident voters with their nomination papers.Once the signatures are certified by the Board of Election Commissioners Dec. 20, the candidates become eligible to be placed on the preliminary ballot.

Key remaining election dates include:

DEC. 20 at 5 p.m., the last day and hour to officially accept nominations once signatures are certified with the Board of Election Commissioners.

DEC. 22 at 5 p.m., the last day and hour for filing withdrawals or objections to nomination papers with the Board of Election Commissioners.

JAN. 13 at 5 p.m., the last day and hour to register to vote for the Preliminary Election.JAN. 17 at 5 p.m., the last day and hour to apply for a mail-in or absentee preliminary ballot.

JAN. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday Absentee Voting, City Hall, Room 114.

JAN. 23 at noon, the last day and hour to apply for an in-person absentee preliminary ballot.

JAN. 24, Preliminary Election - polls open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

JAN. 31 at 5 p.m., the last day and hour to file a recount petition with Board of Election Commissioners.

FEB. 17 at 5 p.m., the last day and hour to register to vote for the Ward 3 Special Election.

FEB. 21 at 5 p.m., the last day and hour to apply for a mail-in or absentee election ballot.

FEB. 25, absentee voting, City Hall, Room 114, from 9 a.m. to noon

FEB. 27 at 5 p.m., the last day and hour to apply for the in-person absentee election ballot.

FEB. 28, Ward 3 Special Election — polls open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

MARCH 10 at 5 p.m., the last day and hour to file for a recount for the election.

Councilor Hugh Dunn resigned as of Dec. 3, leaving the last year of his term open.
