Potential X-factors for Packers against Bucs in NFC title game

The Green Bay Packers can punch their ticket to Super Bowl LV by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game at Lambeau Field.

Beating Tom Brady and the Bucs will require big-time efforts from players beyond the obvious stars such as Aaron Rodgers, Davante Adams, Za’Darius Smith and Jaire Alexander.

Here are a few potential X-factors for the Packers in the NFC title game:

Offense: WR Allen Lazard

Lazard missed the first meeting with the Buccaneers due to a core muscle injury. His presence, both as a perimeter run blocker and secondary passing game threat, was missed. The Packers struggled to run the football, especially with Aaron Jones early on, and the offense got next to nothing after Davante Adams in the passing game. Lazard can be an enforcer for Matt LaFleur in the zone run game, often providing blocks on linebackers and safeties, and also an effective and potentially dangerous down the field weapon for Aaron Rodgers, especially in the play-action passing game. The Packers need to be able to set the tone early along the line of scrimmage in the run game, and getting shot plays down the field could help spread the Bucs thin in coverage. It's possible Lazard's presence as a versatile blocker from tight splits could help the Packers beat Devin White and Lavonte David in the run game.

Defense: OLB Rashan Gary

The Packers must get interior pressure on Tom Brady, heightening the need for disruptive performances from both Kenny Clark and Za'Darius Smith. Gary can still be a game-wrecker in this pass-rushing equation. He's been one of the most disruptive edge rushers in the NFL over the last month, highlighting his rapid progression as a second-year player and underlining the need for more opportunities in this game. He is winning with power and speed, creating opportunities for other rushers and setting a strong edge against the run. Back in October, Gary played just 17 snaps and wasn't a factor. He could write a brand new script for the defense against Brady if he helps the defensive front create consistent pressure. The 12th overall pick in 2019 has been a dominant player over his last two home games.

Special teams: K Mason Crosby

One huge advantage of playing in cold weather can come on special teams. Kicking is especially difficult at Lambeau Field in January, but the Packers have one of the NFL's most experienced cold-weather kickers in Crosby, while the Bucs will probably be holding their breath when Ryan Succop trots onto the field Sunday. A big make from Crosby here or a big miss from Succop there could make all the difference in a game like this one. Kicking a cold football in the swirling winds inside Lambeau Field is always a challenge, but Crosby should give the Packers a clear edge in a close game.
