Potter County Sheriffs bust cockfighting ring in Amarillo's Byrd Addition

Two people were arrested and numerous uncommented immigrants were detained after a cockfighting operation was discovered over the weekend in the Byrd Addition, according to the Potter County Sheriff's Office.

According to a news release from the Potter County Sheriffs Office, on Sat. Feb. 10 deputies were notified of two male subjects arguing, and possible rooster fighting at a property located in the 500 block of LaRuth Street..

Upon arrival, deputies observed approximately 50 people watching fighting roosters in a pen. The individual who was allegedly responsible for setting up the fights was identified as 43 year-old, Ivan Guadelupe Herrera-Lopez. Herrera-Lopez was arrested on scene and transported to the Potter County Detention Center.

During a search of the premises, PCSO stated they had found narcotics. PCSO determined and arrested 41 year-old Juana Sanchez Gonzalez for Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Also on site were over 160 fighting roosters, which were turned over to the Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.

PCSO stated in the release that many of the individuals interviewed were unlawfully in the United States. ICE was notified and took custody of these individuals.

This investigation is still ongoing.
