Pottsville woman injured in West Mahanoy Twp. collision on Route 61

Jun. 7—ALTAMONT — A Pottsville woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries when the SUV she was driving collided with a van in the northbound lanes of Route 61 around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday in West Mahanoy Twp.

West Mahanoy Twp. police Patrolman John Kaczmarczyk Jr. said the woman was traveling north at a high rate of speed, just south of the intersection with Altamont Boulevard, when she apparently suffered a medical condition, causing her to collide with a northbound cargo van.

The impact caused the front passenger's side rim and wheel of the SUV to be ripped off.

The SUV continued north past the intersection with Altamont Boulevard and through a grassy area, struck several trees and two parked cars before coming to a stop near a Lehigh Valley Network medical office building, Kaczmarczyk said.

Frackville EMS and Shenandoah ALS treated the driver of the SUV at the scene; Englewood Fire Company firefighters removed a door to provide better access for medical personnel.

Kaczmarczyk said the woman was taken to a hospital for her possible medical condition as well as any injuries she may have suffered in the crash.

Two men inside the van were uninjured.

Assisting were Frackville and Butler Twp. police.
