Poulin leads defending Division I state champion Exeter to season-opening win

EXETER – The start of the season was a good one for the Exeter High School girls track team, the defending Division I state champions.

The Blue Hawks won eight events and scored 106 points, beating Portsmouth (68) and Winnacunnet (33) in Tuesday's season-opening tri-meet at Exeter High School.

Exeter junior Rachel Poulin was first in both the javelin (105 feet, 5 inches) and long jump (15-9), and was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.61 seconds.

Exeter senior Emma Smith, in her first year in track, was first in the triple Jump (31-7.5), second in the long jump (15-9.5), and fourth in the 200 (29.07).

Other first-place finishes for Exeter included Clara Knab (400, 1:02.2), Clara Rosenbleeth (300 hurdles, 56.88), Runa Kersten-Guiler (shot put, 28-5), Amber Orleans (800, 2:35.59) and  Anna Whitney (discus, 75-5).

Exeter junior Rayna Thompson was second in both the 100 (13.13) and 200 (27.72), and freshman Autumn Fabiano was second in the shot put (26-10), and fourth in the discus (60-8).

Other top-three performances were turned in by Danica Caron (second, 800, 2:38.39), MarLie Macek (second, javelin, 86-7), Sydney MacVicar (second, 300 hurdles, 57.39), Nola Fletcher (second, pole vault, 6-6), Taylor Seaman (third, 400, 1:04.71), Lucille Beem (third, shot put, 25-1), Emma Flewelling (third, discus, 61-2.5); Carly Castaldy (third, long jump, 15-2.25; third, javelin, 79-3) and Alexis Scala (third, triple jump, 27-8).

Exeter's 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of Thompson, Poulin, MacVicar, Martelle McBride, placed second in 54.06. The 4x400 relay, comprised of Ainsley Grant, Orleans, Seaman, and Knab, was third in 4:18.66.

Winnacunnet junior Charlotte Koutalidis was first in the 1,600 (5:33.22) and second in the high jump (4-10). She also ran the anchor leg of Winnacunnet's winning 4x400 relay team, which also consisted of Liana Pacheco, Moxie Clifford and Maitri Clifford.

Winnacunnet's Hayden Adams was first in the high jump, third in the 100 hurdles and fourth in the long jump. Maitri Clifford was second in the 1,600 (5:52.85).

McLaughlin leads Portsmouth boys

Portsmouth junior Cole McLaughlin was first in the 100 (11.59) and 200 (23.75) and ran a leg in the winning 4x100 relay (45.86), leading the Clippers to the win.

Portsmouth scored 90 points, while Exeter (74) and Winnacunnet (41) placed second and third, respectively.

Other members of the winning 4x100 relay team consisted of Angus Moss, Jake Lovern, Princeton and Daniel.

Portsmouth also won the 4x400-meter relay (3:39.22) by Theo Beattie, Ethan Lantz, Brody Parrott and Evan Venn.

Other first-place wins for Portsmouth were by Beattie (800, 2:07.56), Avery Crowell (1,600, 4:34.61), Lovern (110 hurdles, 16.42), Kelly Moriarty (pole vault, 9-0), Ethan Aviezri (41-10) and Jason Yeaton (javelin, 145-0).

Exeter senior Michael Dettore was first in both the long jump (20-2) and triple jump (40-4.5), while Nathan Mikulsky was first in the 400 (53.39) and fourth in the 200 (24.78), and Spencer Mann was first in the 3,200 (11:13.66), and fourth in the 1,600 (4:53.82).

Exeter’s Henry Brassard was first in the discus (111-1). Senior Ryan Luper, in his first career meet, was third in both the javelin (128-10) and triple jump (36-5), and fourth in the long jump (18-1.25).

Exeter sophomore Phineas Reardon was second in both the 100 (11.73) and 200 (24.20), and sophomore Thoren Kersten-Guiler was second in the triple jump (37-2.5) and third in the long Jump (18-6.26).

Other top-three performances were turned in by Colin Grant (second, 400, 55.21), Gavin Malark (second, 1,600, 4:44.72), Brodie Proulx (third, 400, 55.38) and Erik Menger (third, shot put (36-3.5).

Exeter’s 4x100-meter relay team, consisting of Dettore, Reardon, Lachlan Becker, and Desmond Rugg was second (46.33), and the 4x400 relay team of Proulx, Colin Grant, Mikulsky, and Malark was second (3:41.18),

Winnacunnet freshman Ryan Jamison was first in the 300 hurdles and second in the 110 hurdles.

Oliver Duffy was second in the long jump (19-6), the high jump, and 300 hurdles for the Warriors.

Other top-three Winnacunnet performances were turned in by Alex Frost (second, javelin, 141-7), Elias Spaulding (second, discus, 89-5), Henry Bybee (third, 1,600, 4:52.18), Erik Marelli (third, 110 hurdles, 16.83) and Riley Trombley (third, discus).
