Poultry show is an 'egg'-splosion of fun

Jul. 22—Hundreds of chickens were clucking Wednesday morning at the Boone County 4-H Fair as the poultry show got underway.

The chicken cages had papers pinned to them that detailed everything about the chicken, ranging from the farm they came from, their name, breed, purpose and even the color of the eggs they'd lay.

Chickens weren't the only birds in the poultry show — the event featured ducks, geese, and turkeys as well.

One of these special bird owners, 13-year-old Sarah Dison, brought her new duck Vanilla to the fair. She said it was her third or fourth year to compete in the fair, but she got Vanilla only last year.

"I like to take care of the ducks and reunite with my friends here," Dison said, explaining why she keeps returning. "Everyone is really nice."

One of these nice friends was 14-year-old Ana Durell. This is Durell's sixth year to compete and this year she was showing a goose named Jerry.

"Competition is not a big thing here, it's mostly community," Durell said. "I enjoy people looking at my birds at the fair, and I like to look around too."
