  • A Maryland man accidentally bought two Powerball tickets with the same numbers for the April 1 drawing — and wound up winning $1 million on each

  • The Anne Arundel County resident told lottery officials he purchased the ticket using the "replay" feature, and was unaware some of the tickets he bought had the same numbers

  • The winner said he only tends to play these kinds of lottery games when the jackpot is "over $1 billion"

A Maryland man who enjoys playing the lottery managed to purchase not one, but two winning tickets for the April 1 Powerball drawing — and it happened completely by accident.

The man, who has chosen to remain anonymous, won a $1 million prize on each of the two tickets he purchased for the drawing, according to Maryland Lottery officials.

The Anne Arundel County resident said he does not typically play games like Powerball or Mega Millions unless the jackpot is “over a billion dollars.” So when the jackpot reached $1 billion, he tried his luck.

The father of two opted to buy a few tickets from the 7-Eleven store on Bestgate Road in Annapolis using pre-selected numbers he kept in his pocket.

He used the Lottery terminal’s “replay” feature, which allows players to scan an old ticket to get a new one with the same numbers.

What he didn’t know is that some of the tickets were duplicates. So when he checked his tickets the next morning, he was flabbergasted. He had every number except for the Powerball, which he missed by just one number.

He then called his wife to share the big news, and the two celebrated as soon as she returned home. “We had our crying moment,” he told lottery officials.

However, the man had yet to realize his luck had doubled. He made the discovery about 20 minutes later. “It was mind blowing,” he said. “I had no idea I doubled it.”

As for the future, the "power couple" plans to invest the money. “I never thought I’d be here,” he told officials on April 3. “It’s still surreal.”

The 7-Eleven store earned a $5,000 bonus from the Lottery for selling the two winning tickets.
