Highway 143 in Roan Mountain reopened after power pole break

UPDATE: According to the Roan Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, Highway 143 has reopened.

ROAN MOUNTAIN, Tenn. (WJHL) — A broken main electricity pole has prompted the closure of Highway 143 near Smith Branch Road in Roan Mountain on Sunday.

According to a social media post by the Roan Mountain Volunteer Fire Department at around 4 p.m. Sunday, the highway closure will be in effect for the next 6-8 hours while Mountain Electric Cooperative works to repair the broken pole.

The electric company states in a post, “We will not be able to restore the power in that area until this pole is replaced.”

The fire department said drivers are asked to use Hampton Creek Road to Sugar Hollow Road as a detour while the closure is in place.
