Power Profile: Chevrolet Malibu

Three years. That’s how long the previous-generation Chevy Malibu lasted before the car received a complete redesign for the 2016 model year.

Though the old model continues as the Malibu Limited, and likely for a limited time, the new Malibu is substantially improved in just about every conceivable way. Considering that last year’s Malibu ranked 12th among 12 Midsize Car models in the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study,SM the new Malibu arrives just in time to help make Chevrolet more competitive in the segment.

If you’ve ever wondered who buys this family sedan and what owners like the most about it, this Chevrolet Malibu Power Profile will provide some insights.

Who Buys the Chevrolet Malibu?
According to J.D. Power research data, 43% of Malibu owners are female, compared with 39% for the Midsize Car segment. Malibu owners are slightly older, too, at 55 years of age, compared with 54 years for the segment.

With a median household income of $71,667, Malibu owners are less affluent than the Midsize Car segment average, which is $83,127. This is perhaps reflective of the fact that 32% of Malibu owners self-identify as “Hometown Retired.”

Additionally, 62% of Malibu owners claim to agree mostly that they prefer to buy a vehicle from a U.S. company, compared with the segment average of 24%—a stark contrast. More Malibu owners agree somewhat or mostly that their friends and family think of them as people who know a great deal about autos (63% vs. 59%), yet more Malibu owners also agree mostly or somewhat that a vehicle is just a way of getting from place to place (49% vs. 46%).

Fewer Malibu owners (59%) agree mostly that their first consideration in choosing a vehicle is reliability, compared with the segment average (65%).

What Do Owners Most Like about the Malibu?
Based on the results of the 2015 U.S. APEAL Study, and according to the people who own one, the five most appealing attributes of the Chevrolet Malibu are (in descending order) exterior styling, interior design, driving dynamics, the infotainment system, and the seats.
