Power Profile: Volkswagen Jetta

Straight-laced and conservative, Volkswagen’s popular 3-box sedan, the Jetta, may have lost its turbodiesel engine option this year, but it simultaneously gained a new standard turbocharged gas engine that makes the basic lease-special versions more appealing than ever. Additional improvements include a new infotainment system, new driver-assistance technologies, value-laden 1.8T Sport trim level, and a reworked GLI performance model.

Within the Compact Car segment, the aging Jetta faces stiff competition. Nevertheless, in 2015, this VW ranked fifth among 19 Compact Car models in the J.D. Power 2015 U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study.SM Several of those models, such as the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda Civic, and Toyota Prius, are redesigned for 2016. Despite its advancing age, however, the timeless Jetta remains a popular choice.

Who Buys the Volkswagen Jetta?
Based on J.D. Power study data, 56% of Jetta buyers are men, matching the average for the segment. However, they tend to be younger in terms of median age, compared with the segment average (43 years vs. 49), more affluent in terms of median household income ($80,000 vs. $72,719), and more likely to identify themselves as Performance Buyers (15% vs. 9%).

Compared with the average Compact Car buyer, fewer Jetta owners agree that they prefer to buy a vehicle from a U.S. company (27% vs. 40%), and fewer Jetta owners agree that their first consideration in choosing a vehicle is fuel economy (76% vs. 81%).

Jetta buyers like a vehicle with responsive handling and acceleration (93% vs. 85%) and 59% claim that their friends and family think of them as someone who knows a great deal about autos, while just 54% of Compact Car owners believe that.

Fewer Jetta buyers agree that a vehicle is just a way of getting from place to place (40% vs. 52%), and 72% of Jetta buyers say that they like a vehicle that stands out from the crowd, compared with the segment average of 63%.

What Do Owners Most Like about the Jetta?
Based on the results of the 2015 U.S. APEAL Study, and according to the people who own one, the five most appealing attributes of the Volkswagen Jetta are (in descending order) exterior styling, driving dynamics, fuel economy, interior design, and engine/transmission.
