Council Bluffs-born actor David Yost is set to morph back into his birth state and unite with fans at this year’s Des Moines Con.

The two-day festival takes place at HyVee Hall, 730 Third St. in downtown Des Moines, on June 3-4 and stars slated to attend include Yost, WWE standout Kevin Nash, "The Walking Dead" star Ross Marquand and Vincent Martella of "Phineas and Ferb" and "Everybody Hates Chris" fame, plus more nostalgic guests from the worlds of comics, cosplay, anime, art, TV, toys and more.

“Being born in Iowa and going to University in Iowa, this should be a fun return,” Yost wrote on social media platforms since the announcement.

Yost attended Graceland University in Lamoni, the college town of roughly 2,000 people in southern Iowa, before a move to California led to a big break and star turn in “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.”

“I’m just excited to get to come back to Iowa … it’s always fun to be at a ComicCon because people are there to get their nerd on, as they say,” he said.

The actor’s return to Iowa comes after an appearance in this year’s Power Rangers’ 30th anniversary Netflix special "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always." The fan favorite film fueled positive reviews that landed it on the platform’s top 10 list in nearly two dozen countries during its release week.

'The fact that it did so great on a global level is really exciting'

The nostalgic slice of ’90s action came back to the pop culture stratosphere earlier this year with a grown-up take on the original hit series, which spawned in part from Yost's longtime advocacy to bring back a full-fledged version of the show. Yost said that fans have enjoyed the memories and moments that the project provided.

“Fans have been saying, ‘Oh my gosh, it takes me right back to my childhood,'” Yost said.

“Power Rangers for me has never really died because ComicCons have been around. I’ve always sort of been at the forefront of how fans feel," he continued.

Yost said he was "pleasantly surprised" by the success of the film.

“The fact that it did so great on a global level is really exciting. It’s something I’ve been fighting for,” he said.

The movie featured a reunion between Yost and Walter Emanuel Jones, the first Black Ranger from the original cast, with replacements of Jason David Frank, who was the Green Ranger and later White Ranger, and Thuy Trang who played the Yellow Ranger in the hit series.

"We went to New Zealand and we filmed it and I was excited to work with my co-star Walter Jones. It was sort of exciting to put the Spandex on and become superheroes again," Yost added.

The action star added that the series and its subsequent return three decades later has brought back positive memories for folks from all backgrounds, such as viewers who knew that no matter what, they had five to six superheroes in Spandex to watch.

“A lot of kids maybe didn’t grow up in a good household, there (were) a lot of family issues, but Power Rangers was their one saving grace,” he said.

Yost is looking forward to reliving the days of his youth, spent during visits to the metro while attending Graceland, when he touches down in Des Moines during the first weekend of June.

“I used to go up there with my friends in college and just go to the mall.”
