Power surge in Flushing: Mets strike back vs. Yankees with two HRs in opening inning

NEW YORK — A little more than a week since the Home Run Derby in Los Angeles, the Mets and Yankees are putting on their own show at Citi Field.

After the Yankees Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo knocked back-to-back solo home runs off the Taijuan Walker in the opening half of the first inning, the Mets did not waste any time mounting a quick response from a couple of newcomers to the Subway Series.

Starling Marte opened the Mets' scoring for the with his 10th home run of the season before Eduardo Escobar helped them double up the Yankees in the opening inning with a two-run shot off Jordan Montgomery to give the Mets a 4-2 lead.

It was Escobar's first hit since the All-Star break as he was 0-for-8 in the two previous games against the Padres. It was Escobar's sixth home run in the month of July after a miserable June which included just three long balls.

After Judge's home run moved him into a tie with Pete Alonso for the major league RBI lead, the Mets first baseman countered with an RBI double to score Francisco Lindor to move back in front.
