Powerball jackpot reaches $1 billion for only third time in history

For the third time ever, the Powerball jackpot has reached the billion-dollar mark as the jackpot continues to grow for Wednesday night's drawing.

Originally projected at $900 million after no one won it all in Monday's drawing, the jackpot kept climbing and is estimated at $1 billion. The cash option will be $516.8 million, according to the lottery website.

“This has turned into a historic jackpot run; this is only the third time in Powerball’s 31-year history that a jackpot has reached the billion-dollar threshold,” said Drew Svitko, Powerball Product Group Chair and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director.

While no one won Monday's grand prize, five million-dollar tickets matched all five white balls, according to lottery officials. Those five tickets sold in Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, New York and Pennsylvania. Three other tickets, sold in Arkansas, Georgia and Texas, each matched all five white balls and increased the $1 million prize to $2 million by including the Power Play option.

Monday's winning numbers were 5, 8, 9, 17, 41 and red Powerball 21. The power play multiplier was 4X.

Powerball drawings are held each Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. EST. Drawings can be viewed live at powerball.com/watch-drawing.

The Powerball jackpot was last hit in the April 19, 2023 drawing, when a ticket in Ohio matched all five white balls and the red Powerball to win a grand prize worth $252.6 million. Since then, there have been 38 consecutive drawings without a jackpot winner, according to lottery officials.
